Written from running this: 19 pieces on why appointments are hard to get, what the booking system does when you push it, and how to tell a real service from the other kind. Where we quote a figure, we measured it.

The whole sequence, in order

How to book a VFS appointment

Seven steps, and the order matters more than any of them individually. Two of the seven are where almost everyone loses time: deciding where they are eligible to apply, and starting the search late. Both are settled before you ever open a calendar.

Getting an appointment

Why the calendar is empty, when it is not, and what actually changes the odds.

Why VFS says "no appointment slots available"

It is a live reading, not a verdict. The calendar was empty at the second you loaded it. Appointments on a busy route appear in batches, without notice, and are taken within minutes — so the message you see is almost always true and almost never permanent.

When do VFS appointments actually open?

There is no timetable, and the ones circulating in forums do not hold up. What we can show is the shape of it, from 216,116 of our own calendar checks: rare, clustered, and gone within minutes. We do not publish the exact hours, and this is why.

Dubai or Abu Dhabi: which VFS centre?

It depends on the destination, and it flips completely. On the Latvia route Dubai released an opening every 810 checks against one every 1,889 in Abu Dhabi. On Portugal, Dubai caught nothing at all across 23,429 checks while Abu Dhabi released one in 83.

Portugal visas from the UAE: the video check

The Portuguese consulate added a live video verification the applicant has to attend in person, which is a step nobody can do on your behalf. The route still exists; what changed is who has to be there. Saudi Arabia and Qatar are the confirmed Gulf alternatives.

Why the slot vanished while you were booking

Nothing was held for you between clicking the date and confirming it. The calendar shows what was free when the page loaded, and the appointment belongs to whoever completes the booking first - so the seconds you spend filling in details are seconds it is still available to everyone else.

VFS account blocked or restricted — what to do

First work out what is restricted: your account or your connection. That single distinction decides whether changing network fixes it in a minute or wastes your evening - and the codes cannot be read by their first three digits.

Booking VFS appointments for a family or a group

The difficulty is not four times one booking. It is that a batch with two free places is no use to a family of four, so the openings that count are rarer than the ones a single applicant can use. Decide in advance whether you would split the group.

When to start looking for a visa appointment

Earlier than feels necessary. Applications can usually be lodged six months ahead, demand peaks from late spring through summer, and the appointment is the one step with no published schedule - so it is the step that needs the margin.

Who to trust with it

What a legitimate service asks for, what it never asks for, and where the legal line runs.

Never give anyone your VFS password

No appointment service needs your VFS password, and since 2026 there is a concrete reason it does not: the confirmation step sends a one-time code to you. Anyone insisting on the password is asking for something the job does not require.

Is using a visa appointment service legal?

The prosecutions in this market have been about capturing appointments and reselling them as a commodity, not about getting help with a booking. The line is whether an appointment is filed for you in your own name, or held as stock and sold on.

How to tell a real appointment service from a scam

Four checks settle it: what is promised, when you pay, what they ask you to hand over, and who they claim to be. Each is answerable before you send any money, and each has a wrong answer that should end the conversation.

How the process works

The rules that decide where you can apply and how long it takes.

How long a Schengen visa takes

Fifteen calendar days is the published standard across the routes we have parsed, extendable to forty-five where the file needs a closer look. The trap is not the number. It is that the clock starts at your appointment, so the hardest part of the wait happens before it starts running at all.

Applying for a Schengen visa from another country

The default rule is that you apply in the country where you legally reside, and ignoring it risks a refusal rather than a wasted trip. There are genuine exceptions, but they turn on your own residency - which is why this is a question to settle before you pay anyone.

Which Schengen country should you apply to?

The country of your main destination, or the first country you enter if the trip is evenly split. Not the one with the earliest appointment. Applying to the wrong member state is a refusal risk, and it is checked against the itinerary you submit.

Do VFS premium services get you an appointment?

No. Every paid add-on VFS sells operates on an appointment you have already booked - a nicer room, an out-of-hours slot, a courier for your passport. None of them puts an appointment into an empty calendar, and the confusion between the two is what makes them feel like a disappointment.

What a Schengen visa actually costs

There are two charges, not one - the consular fee and the centre's own service charge - and the consular fee varies by category, age and nationality. Anyone quoting a single figure for a route has either picked one row out of a table or made it up.

What changed at VFS in 2026

Two changes: a one-time code sent to the applicant at confirmation, and the appointment bound to a specific application reference. They were aimed at people capturing appointments to resell. For everyone else the practical effect is that you must be reachable for a moment at the end.

Can you change a VFS appointment?

Usually you can, and on a contested route you usually should not. Rescheduling releases the appointment you hold before it gives you another one, and on a route where openings are rare that trade can leave you with nothing.
